WHITE ROCK

White Rock (1977)

This is exactly how I like to watch the Olympics. None of the facts or figures of the game, only focusing on the feats of the human body, highlighting perfect primary color fashion, guided by James Coburn and set to the kinetic synth of Rick Wakeman. Gold medal.

It's eye candy. The amazing split screen scene allows us to see what's in front of the skis and simultaneously what falls behind. I love the tight closeups of preparations--adjusting goggles, pulling gloves, thrusting hips, and the sprinting of the push start. It's segmented by event, with an intro and sometimes a demonstration by Coburn. He is so charismatic isn't he? He's funny and self deprecating, fully aware that these are artists in their own right who've perfected their craft that also deserve our attention. Gosh I've got such a crush on him. I could probably listen to him talk to me about sports for hours, but hey luckily I don't have to! The movie's only 76 minutes!

He's just so cool. The best fakeout scene of all time. "You didn't really think that was me?", well yes in fact I did James!!

This film is a gorgeous floating world that shows me exactly what it's like to fall off the face of a mountain without ever fearing hitting the ground.
